California Pistachios and Gestational Diabetes (GDM)
A 2017 study researched the effects of pistachios on pregnant women with either impaired glucose tolerance or GDM, and its good news for pistachio lovers.
Eating pistachios resulted in a significantly lower rise in blood sugar, compared to eating whole wheat bread, in both groups of women. In addition, both blood glucose levels and insulin levels barely rose above baseline values after eating pistachios. The researchers also measured a hormone called GLP-1, which helps the body decrease blood sugar levels by stimulating the release of insulin. Pistachio consumption actually increases levels of GLP-1, which allows the body to effectively use blood sugar. The researchers concluded the study showed pistachios may help maintain blood glucose levels while providing essential nutrients to the mother and baby during pregnancy and that pistachios could be a healthy snack for pregnant women with impaired glucose tolerance or GDM. Pregnant women should always follow the advice of their doctor.
About Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) develops during pregnancy and like other types of diabetes, GDM affects how cells use sugar (glucose). GDM causes high blood sugar that can affect pregnancy and the baby’s health. The incidence of GDM varies globally from 2% to 14%. The prevalence of GDM among rural and urban populations of India has been reported as 16% and 17.8%, respectively. Pregnant women can help control GDM by eating healthy foods, exercising and if necessary, taking medication.
